DEX was founded by serial entrepreneur Leon Smith who has been active in the Crypto Asset investment eco system as an early adopter. Leon has been working with the Financial Services Regulatory Authority proactively since the first release of their guidance note in 2017 to understand the regulatory implications and structure set forth by the regulator in the Abu Dhabi Global Market - one of the world’s leading financial services hubs on a global scale.
Leon's experience spans over 12 years including project management, politics, the Olympic Games, high profile construction projects, commercial structuring, strategic planning, international market development and law. He has spent over ten years living and working in the Middle East as well as developing the GCC market for several key project acquisitions. Leon has worked for Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, a leading PR firm in the WPP Group and a global services consultancy based in Switzerland prior to founding several leading advisory firms in the GCC market.
Terry joins DEX as Chief Technology Officer bringing 20+ years of experience working at regulated stock exchanges and other leading financial institutions such as the London Stock Exchange, Singapore Stock Exchange, Fiserv, DTCC and Barclays Global Securities. Most recently at the London Stock Exchange Terry has been leading the evolution of the clearing, settlement and depository solutions leveraging both traditional and emerging technologies for the Millenium Exchange Services provided by LSEG. Moreover he was responsible for Millennium PostTrade's product strategy for settlement services therein.
Whilst at the Singapore Stock Exchange he was responsible for the Securities Clearing and Depository with an annual revenue in excess of £200m. He initiated and drove the strategic roadmap for Singapore Exchange’s post-trade environment, to reduce risk, increase operational efficiency and grow revenues. He managed the introduction of a pre-settlement matching solution from the definition of the business requirements and development of the pricing strategy through to successful implementation whilst creating significant operational savings to the market participants.
He has extensive experience with post trade settlement and clearing including competitive positioning, business development and product management.
Phil joins DEX as Chief Information Officer bringing 20+ years in investment banking, capital markets, futures, derivatives and FOREX. He has worked for leading financial institutions such as Goldman Sachs, Barclays Capital, The Bank of New York, Citibank, UBS and ABN. Phil has structured macro implementation of Risk, Collateral, Clearing, Treasury and Data services to increase controls and minimise funding and capital costs for institutions in partnership with vendors and buy side clients.
His experience spans from working in Treasury Structured Solutions leading the PLC balance sheet to structured asset sales, RWA initiatives, Capital and Liquidity/Funding solutions to meet balance sheet targets. Moreover he has managed Counterparty Risk, RWAs and CVA associated with Derivative Portfolios through CLNs, CDS's and Securitisations. He has extensive experience managing fund accounting operations in terms of custody / fund services as well as pricing and valuations. During his tenure at Goldman Sachs he managed multiple groups within the European Equity Operations including Market Fails Management, Client Fails Management, Prime Brokerage Operations, Syndicate Operations, Operation Risk and Interest claims.
Halid Mousa acts as Group Chief Architect at DEX where he oversees the execution and operations of the trading platform, market surveillance, crypto traceability analysis, cold / offline storage of digital assets, digital assets custody and trading operations therein.
Prior to joining DEX, Halid founded and acted as CEO/CTO a platform for programmatic digital advertising where he supervised and actively participated in building the scalable and distributed core engine for the proprietary DSP and Ad Exchange. Moreover, he oversaw the DevOps and deployed secure systems on Mesos, AWS and finally Google Cloud. He is well versed in programming languages such as Erlang, Scala, Python, JS, Vue, PHP and Go.
Halid holds a degree in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering and an MBA from Texas A&M-Commerce with
Katharine joins DEX as our Marketing and Communications Director bringing over 20 years’ experience from IT and Telecommunications where she has held Key Account Management, Channel Management and Senior Marketing positions.
Prior to joining DEX, Katharine has been responsible for driving the marketing strategy and execution across Middle East and Africa at Vodafone Business, one of the world’s largest Telco’s. This has included campaigns to build awareness and position the enterprise brand, customer advocacy programs, social media activities and she has been instrumental to delivering programs to increase executive engagement at the world’s largest multinationals. Prior to that Katharine held various roles across Europe and Middle East at Cyber security company Symantec where she delivered significant growth across the consumer brand Norton and together with driving channel initiatives for the B2B portfolio.
Katharine is passionate about innovation and all things tech especially how it can deliver better outcomes for business, society and economies across the world.
Arash Saidi is the General Counsel of GDAT.
Arash is a seasoned corporate lawyer with nearly 20 years’ experience in private practice and institutional investments. Prior to joining GDAT, Arash was general counsel and lead the legal departments of major GCC based regulated institutions and investment companies including ADCorp and GFH. Arash commenced his career in private practice in his home city of Brisbane, Australia.
Arash holds degrees from the Queensland University of Technology, Australia in both Law (L.L.B) and Business (Banking & Finance). Arash has been admitted as a solicitor to the High Court of Australia, High Court of England & Wales and the Supreme Court of Queensland, Australia.
Lynsey joins DEX as our Finance Director bringing over 20 years of experience working at leading financial institutions in the UK, US and Middle East including Dubai Mercantile Exchange Ltd, Deutsche Bank, UBS Investment Bank and Ernst & Young. Lynsey is responsible for the overall financial strategy and direction at DEX.
She previously worked for Dubai Mercantile Exchange Ltd where she was responsible for the financial control and oversight of the entities within the group structure, as well as being responsible for the implementation of the Risk Management Framework. Prior to that she was the Finance lead for the opening and set up of 3 Branches for Deutsche Bank across the Middle East. This included assisting with obtaining regulatory licenses and approvals, providing financial support for internal capital injection requests, testing and implementation of general and sub-ledger systems and financial and regulatory reporting for Branches in various regulatory jurisdictions. Lynsey was a trusted Finance Business Partner supporting several business lines within Global Markets and the Global Transaction Banking businesses.
Hugh joins DEX as Chief Strategy Officer and brings 23+ years in investment banking, vendor related financial services product management, and complex banking project and program management. His specialties include strategic planning, go to market strategies (new product and startup), pre- sales support, senior stakeholder management, project governance, and global delivery management. His previous employers include Rabo Bank, ABN AMRO, Barclays and Natwest.
He has been responsible for the product and technology delivery strategy for a dynamic, new derivatives clearing platform and created the multi-phase product and delivery strategy. This resulted in attracting and securing TMX, LSE and a key I/CSD as delivery partners. In addition he redirected the product strategy as market regulations evolved.
He has also provided program management across 2 key projects for CVA trading, IM/funding solution areas and brought to live status a fully reconciled CVA risk trading platform, and a cross bank- collateral inventory solution. He has worked as the Global Business and Technology Pre-Sales Manager, driving strategic PFE/CVA risk client opportunities and, aiding in overall bank project establishment and Markit-QuIC delivery planning.
Tim joins DEX as Chief Operating Officer bringing 20+ years of experience in financial services technology at IBM, Credit Suisse and Alpha. Tim has held senior executive roles at leading regulated stock exchanges as CIO of the Australian Stock Exchange as well as senior roles at the Toronto Stock Exchange.
He is an Experienced technologist who has worked with developing trading technology for leading financial firms such as TD Securities, RBC Capital Markets, CIBC World Markets, National Bank Financial, BMO Capital Markets Scotia Capital and focused on increasing trading revenue as well as building new products for the Capital Markets. Tim is well versed in the building and management of Algorithmic Trading and Direct Market Access (DMA) business. He has developed digital wallet and online cash solutions in over 200 countries and territories processing a combined transactional volume of US $56 billion. He has managed payment solution Application Delivery, Portfolio Management, Production Operations Services, Data Analytics, Infrastructure, and Cyber Security.
Saeed has been advising DEX from our initial discussions with both the FSRA and ADGM, forming an integral part of the team from the inception of our platform. His experience within the crypto eco system is extensive and unparalleled within the United Arab Emirates and GCC markets therein.
Saeed is Co-founder of Alphabit Digital Currency Fund and Managing Director at Binary Financial. These roles have given him tremendous insight into the Crypto currency space and enabled him to develop a key network of contacts which has helped him grow his knowledge of the market exponentially. Saeed started his career at ADIA in October 2009 as an Operations specialist then from May 2013 became a Fixed Income & Treasury specialist. In June 2018 he decided to leave ADIA to focus on the Crypto currency industry.
Adam is currently a Principal at BCG Digital Ventures where he focuses on innovation within the supply chain, logistics, fulfilment, and e-commerce spaces. Post graduating his MBA Adam co founded a greenfield venture which was later acquired. He has extensive experience in entrepreneurship, operations, venture capital, and management consulting. Adam structured investments at RRE Ventures working within the Venture Capital eco system evaluating a brand spectrum of potential investment opportunities. Prior to RRE he worked at Mubadala focusing on the technology sector and at Mckinsey with an industry focus on consumer goods and functional focus on private equity diligences.
Adam is a former sprinter turned mid-distance runner, backpacker, cyclist and holds a BA in Economics from Harvard University and a MBA from Columbia University.
Operations and middle office director/manager with over 25 years financial services experience working for leading investment and custodial banks, brokers and technology companies.
Lee’s experience spans across Goldman Sachs International, UBS Investment Bank, Bank of New York , Deutsche International Bank, National Bank of Kuwait and Société Générale which included managing and covering the following business areas; prime brokerage, emerging markets, collateral management, operational risk and control, fund accounting, trade capture, reconciliations, fee management, dividends, vendor management, corporate actions and various settlement teams for both international and domestic markets.
Solid project and technical background with detailed front to back process understanding for Fixed Income, Equities, Emerging Markets, Foreign Exchange and OTC Derivatives markets.
Mr. Kulaib has over three decades of banking and investment experience. His exposure to investment and commercial banking includes working with leading local, regional and international banks such as Citibank, Gulf International Bank (GIB), First Gulf bank and Noor Bank.
He was a founding member of Aseel Finance in Abu Dhabi, Reem Investment and held several senior posts such as CEO of Noor Bank and Group CEO of Abu Dhabi Capital Group. Recently, Mr. Kulaib held the post of Group CEO of Al Nahdha Investment Group. Currently he is Chairman of Oldbridge Invest LLC and resides over several Board of Directorship seats of several companies. Mr. Kulaib is a graduate in economics and business administration from the University of Tennessee, USA.
Rick Klink is a technology specialist with over 20 years of experience in the Financial Services industry. He gained a bachelor’s Degree in Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering from Monash University in Melbourne (1982-1986) He joined Monash Infantry Regiment – Australian Army Reserve in 1983. He graduated from officer training school and received his commission in 1986.
Initial employment was with IBM Australia as a Computer Systems Engineer. Management roles followed in the engineering, consulting and sales/marketing sides of the organization, rising to Executive level. Employment was performed in both Australia and offshore locations. He was awarded the IBM Golden Circle award in 1996, one of the highest forms of recognition within the company globally. Rick then went on to found Paritech (2000). Paritech is a Fintech company providing trading and investing technology both in Australia and globally. Paritech was part of the development team that built Comsec’s sharetrading platform (ProTrader). Comsec is Australia’s largest StockBroker with over 1.5 million clients.
In 2005, Rick founded D2MX, an independent Australian direct execution StockBroking firm. D2MX rose to over $700 million per month in trading turnover per month. D2MX was sold to Penson Inc in 2008 In 2009, Rick founded Bespoke Portfolio, a dealer group focusing on FinTech / RoboAdvice companies providing Managed Account services. Bespoke Portfolio now provides services to some of the largest RoboAdvice companies in Australia. In 2013, Rick co-founded OpenMarkets, an independent Australian StockBroking firm. Rick was CEO until 2017, then moving to CTO and Executive Director role. OpenMarkets now has a turnover of approximately $4Billion per month and Assets on platform of over $1.5 billion.
